65nm CELL now in production for the PS3

The CELL processor - Image 1Yep, that’s right. This 6 GHz, 65nm computer CMOS SOI processor is now under production, as Sony said it would do by 2007. PS3 fans, your moment has arrived: Sony began the mass production of the 65 nm CELL processor, although European customers should know that it is uncertain whether the new CELL chip will be slapped on their PS3s for the launch. Maybe it’s for a newer PS3 model

But like it was said before, the chip is cheaper to produce than the 90 nm version inside all PS3’s out now. And it’s relatively cooler. Does this mean it will be cheaper? Probably not, seeing Sony’s PS3 sales since launch. But hey, as long as it’s cooler. Oh and the CELL isn’t just for the PS3. It will be inserted in a few more Sony and Toshiba products as well.
