Activision: hardware sales decline is PS2’s fault

ps2Hardware sales have not been doing so hot. Unfortunate, but overall sales are pointing down south right now. There are many possible factors – the economy, the end of the holiday splurge, heck, even warring fanboys. But if you ask Activision, it’s none of the above. According to them, it’s all the PS2’s fault.

“In 2009, total retail software sales in the US and Europe were down ten per cent due mainly to steep declines in PS2 software sales,” said Mike Griffith, CEO of Activision Publishing. “…as publishers continue to lessen their exposure to the platform, and lower cache rates for the casual consumer, including declines in higher priced peripheral-based games.”

He explains that it’s because they’ve steered clear of the PS2 that they’re not affected by the sales slump. “We expect that the PS2 segment will again decline significantly and that software for the DS and PSP handhelds will also be down this year,” he said. “Overall, our exposure to the PS2 and handheld markets are minimal, as they are projected to be less than ten per cent of our revenues in 2010.”
