Analysts Predict It’s Gonna Be One Tough Climb For Sony

long way up...The year 2006 is definitely not Sony‘s year. With wave after wave of controversies and production issues, the great technology innovator finds itself pressed hard against the cold wall.

The most recent blow to Sony is the delay of the release of the much-awaited PlayStation 3 due to problems with the production process of the Blu-ray diode. Unfortunately, it may also prove to be the biggest. According to analysts, Sony will definitely encounter a whole lot of struggles with the console’s sales as it trails feebly in the wake of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, as well as Nintendo. The delay of PS3’s release will most likely translate to Xbox 360 having the holiday market to itself, plus practically the first quarter of next year.

But everyone’s really up on their toes for PS3, right? For sure, once it gets released people will be elbowing their way to the nearest retail stores to get their own units. Sales shouldn’t be a problem then…right?

Yes, that may be true, says analysts. PS3 may sell like hotcakes on winter morn upon release, no doubt about that, but what essentially matters is the subsequent sales. And taking it from the perspective of a high definition video player, Sony Blu-ray‘s high pricing can actually prove to be a disadvantage given that other companies – like Toshiba – are also working on the same technology with a much cheaper price.

The March-April release of the PS3 is not exactly the ripest season to launch an expensive console, as people will pretty much still be recovering from the holiday and post-holiday expenses. In addition to that, Microsoft will be laughing their way to the bank, not only because of their Xbox 360’s headstart in the market, but also because they are bringing out a US$200 DVD plug-in for their consoles. Another cheap option for the consumers.

Hmmm…that certainly is one bleak scenario for Sony. And the party’s only just begun. But inspite of all these setbacks, the analysts are confident that Sony will be able close the gap and get back in the race full-swing once PS3 is finally released without any further glitches. But closing the gap will be hard work, and will entail some time.

But still, it’s always better to keep an eye out for that silver lining.
