Remains of iPod Nano after the accident - Image 1Another case of a spontaneously combusting iPod was recently sighted when The Consumerist reader Dale reported having his first generation iPod Nano suddenly “explode open and start shooting sparks and spewing smoke” while charging it on his PC’s USB port.

Dale sent a rather lengthy complaint to Apple, explaining the situation after engaging in a extended discussion with customer support regarding the matter. Customer service initially refused to have the unit replaced, due to the iPod’s warranty being long expired. However, the company recently reconsidered and agreed to have the device replaced.

There were previous reports of faulty iPod Nano units in Japan, which similarly shot out sparks while recharging. Many suspected the defect was tied into the lithium-ion battery with model number MA099J/A. Investigations have already been conducted regarding the matter, although it is rather surprising to find cases like this still persisting even today.
