Bug alert(?): Much ado about Bear Mangles

World of Warcraft Forums member Bullshift, was recently able to post evidence that Mangle is fully capable of doing more damage than supposedly possible. Take a gander at the images that he presents:

Of course, with emotions still running high due to recent issues, several other posters showed very pointed responses. A user named Lisa exclaims:

Sometimes when you trigger Maul first, and then slip a Mangle in before the Maul happens, you get the Cat Sound Effect and – judging by the screenshots and by my personal experience: You get the Mangle (Cat) damage formula too.

That’s where the big Mangle crits are coming from, and that’s why people are upset.

But that’s okay. We’ll just nerf everything.

No need to investigate the bug.

Forums member Brun also notes that the reproduction of this bug is very difficult to reproduce in controlled situations. He adds that most of the complaints regarding this bug stems from PVP, and he believes that if ever the devs will look into this problem, that PVP should be the immediate focus. Official Blizzard Poster Nethaera has responded with this:

Many players expressed a concern that there was a bug in Dire Bear form that makes the bear form ability mangle create cat form mangle sounds when using Mangle while maul is lit up. The concern also came up that it was in fact using Cat Form Mangle instead of Bear mangle. This is not true. After internal testing we found that the Bear Form mangle’s damage output was correct and the sound file is merely very similar so is difficult to distinguish between the two.

User response to Nethaera’s clarification is also pointed. Auralie notes: “If bear mangle’s damage is correct, why it getting nerfed? :P”
