Call of Duty developers Infinity Ward and Treyarch have separately debunked rumors that allege Activision is planning to introduce a pay-to-play model to Call of Duty games.

In response to the rumors, Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling tweeted, “For the record, nobody has to pay to play [Call of Duty] or [Modern Warfare 2] multiplayer, nor will they.”

Treyarch community manager Josh Olin also released a similar denial regarding the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops: “No, you will not have to ‘Pay to Play’ [Call of Duty: Black Ops] Multiplayer either. Rumour squashed.”

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has repeatedly hinted at plans to institute a subscription fee for the franchise’s multiplayer, and analyst Michael Pachter expects that it may happen by the end of the year.
