Despite its immense popularity, especially in Japan, Monster Hunter 3 has one nasty little deal breaker that could jeopardize its success. If you wanted online play in Japan, you’d have to cough up and pay for monthly subscription fees to pay for servers. Luckily, Capcom now sees that that might not be such a good idea, and is now looking for alternatives to get rid of those fees.

Chris Kramer, Capcom USA’s senior director of communications and community, explained the matter back in TGS 09:

It’s something that we’re looking into at the moment and there are a few factors to consider. Firstly, Monster Hunter isn’t as popular in the West, so it might put people off. Secondly, Japan doesn’t have Friend Codes, so Capcom run all the servers and the monthly fee is essentially to pay for those costs.

The thought of having to pay extra monthly could definitely prove to be make-or-break for the game, at least for those who have plans of playing Monster Hunter 3online. Hopefully, they’ll find a way to make ends meet on that matter.
