China cracks down on using fake names to register video games

The General Administration of Press and Publication in China is taking some additional measures to restrict online gaming time for children. To start off with, there will now be punishments for people caught using fake information to register their gaming accounts. If a users account is deemed to be registered with false information, the offending account can be reset to level 1 and / or have all the items stripped from the characters. On top of that, when people register their accounts, they are required to use their ID card numbers. Using these ID numbers parents can track their childrens’ gaming usage.

General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) video and online publishing department director Kou Xiaowei said that GAPP will institute real name registration in the online gaming industry before June, reports Chongqing Evening News. Under the new system, gamers will have to use their ID card number to sign in to games. The report said that players that provide false information will be punished by having virtual items taken away or having their character reset to level one. Parents will be able find out which games their children play through an online search service. Kou said that a trial of the real name registration service will be launched in Shanda, The9, Kingsoft, Optisp, Sina, Sohu and Netease’s games. Kou also said that GAPP will work to increase domestic online games’ market share to 60 percent.
