However, it seems that this will stop soon as the latest move from Codemasters indicate that it is not only targetting the operators of such websites but its costumers as well.

Accordingly, the company has acquired the services of law firm Davenport Lyons to do the legal battle for them. The reports added that the first casualties of this move are going to be BT and PlusNet subscribers.

It was also mentioned that Codemasters’ lawyers have already obtained a court order under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act for ISPs to hand over an unknown number of customer details.

On the other hand, there have been some complaints about this recent development. Several Internet users are now complaining that they have received an email from Codemasters even though they didn’t download anything. Here’s part of a consumer’s complaint:

I have received a letter saying I have downloaded a file called Colin McRae Dirt for the Xbox 360 and they want me to pay 511 GBP (US$ 1,036.76) to them. Having checked my computer to my knowledge, I have not downloaded any such file and do not have it on my computer.

They sent me five letters all about the same game but with different IP addresses and different times. I’m not sure what to do they want a response in 14 days and they want me to sign saying I did it and won’t do it again.

Both Codemasters and the lawyers of Davenport Lyons were unable to comment on the matter.
