Contrary to popular belief, less than 20% of next-gen titles are shooters

Now THIS is a shooter game - Image 1Most people would say the next-gen platforms are only for shooters and pimple-faced teenagers who enjoy them, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Website FPS Source looked it up, and it was revealed that what’s in them is more than just the guns and guys in armor.

Among 137 games previously released or to be released this August on Microsoft‘s Xbox 360, only 11% are FPS. Third-person shooters scream of Gears of War and GRAW, but those aren’t enough to lift the genre above 6%. More than half of currently existing titles are either sports or action/adventure games, both at 26%.

Games available on Sony‘s own next-gen platform, the PlayStation 3, aren’t much different from the 360. Among 53 titles the research gathered, sports games make up 34% while action/adventure contribute 24%.

Even the Wii, which people know as the console for party games, is dominated by the two genres. A whopping 35% of action/adventure games are on the Wii out of 77 games currently available or about to be released. Sports games are down to 15.5%, but there are only 13% of family-oriented or party games.
