Crackdown: Interview with Developer Dave Jones

We’ve known for quite some time that Real Time Worlds and Microsoft Game Studios have teamed to bring in a new action-driving game, Crackdown, to the Xbox 360. We’ve even took a peek at some of the game’s screenshots. But the best way to get information about the upcoming game is through its developer, Dave Jones.

Xbox.com sat down with Jones to find out what the game has in store for us.

According to Jones, Crackdown allows players to fully manipulate the game’s surrounding enviroment, tying the story to the landscape in which the story takes place. It promisess full interactivity, which can be made possible by the power of the Xbox 360.

Asked how multiplayer will be implemented, Jones said, Crackdown will take full advantage of co-op multiplayer gameplay and is designed so that the single-player experience evolves significantly by approaching it with friends. Strategies that simply weren’t available with only one player suddenly prove to be deliciously destructive as gamers tackle each situation from multiple angles.

The freeform exploratory nature of the game keeps the game going even after the single-player portion has been finished. Players can either take agents online and play cooperatively with others or they can create new agents to find different ways of cleaning up the city. Ranking of players is based on a combination of speed and skills, so expect that there will be an emphasis on honing strategies either by exploration or learning from cooperative playing.

Going into the character design and look, players can’t specifically design themselves into the game, but the characters can change physically over time depending on players’ interaction with others. Character skills can only improve if they are put into good use. Tossing around an armored car will help a character develop muscles. Getting comfy with the game’s arsenal of firepower will help a character become first-class marksman. You get the idea.

Jones also talked about the game’s weapons and vehicles, plus its highly possible appearance to Xbox Live. Learn more by reading the full interview.
