Dark Age of Camelot Grab Bag This Week – Sanya Addresses Your Concerns

DAoC UnicornSo, the enchanted world of Dark Age of Camelot not so enchanting lately? Your guild moved to a new server, and now, there’s nowhere to recreate your old village? Maybe your Toon is unwelcome in Leirvik, and you’re wondering if there’s hope… Or is your Guild so old and decrepit that YOU’RE the only member left?

This week’s Camelot Grab-Bag has answers to these concerns – and more – as Mythic Entertainment‘s Sanya Thomas answers the burning questions to which DAoC denizens have been seeking the answers.

Hers is not an easy job, as you might imagine, being as how many of these are technical in nature. Still, there are some who comment about the “softball” questions on the grab bag – obviously, someone who has never attempted to write software code. Sanya herself had this to say:

“Five year old programs created by multiple people have layers like an archaeological dig. Different coders have different attitudes about commenting their work, too. In other words, you have to look in three different places to find all the relevant factors to a simple question, and the third place is by no means obvious to someone who didn’t write it in the first place.

Neither the designer or the programmer I work with these days did the original work or the RA design. So the simple question took more than a half hour to look up, and they came back to me with different answers. We brought in one of the coders who did the RAs for a consultation, and tested the results to be sure nothing had changed from our intent due to other changes to the code in the past several years.”

Behind the magic are many hours of tedious, mind-warping detail work such as those of us who are non-geeks cannot imagine…
