Dan Trudge is the Executive Producer and Project Director for Bioware‘s upcoming RPG, Dragon Age: Origins (PC, PS3, Xbox 360). He also just put up his first dev blog post in IGN. First order of business: A history lesson on the Grey Wardens.

He described the Grey Wardens as “a secretive brotherhood that spans the ages,” and in the grand tradition of any secret society, they’ve had a hand in many of their world’s history changing events. Particularly in events known as Blights.

Apparently Thedas (Dragon Age‘s setting), has had to go through several “Blights,” times in which hordes of “darkspawn” come up from underground and make a grand mess of things. It’s the Grey Wardens that hustle them back to their holes and save civilization every time that happens. They’re so good at it that it’s their sole purpose for existence.

Also in the grand tradition of secret societies, the Grey Wardens are comprised mostly of the best and the brightest folks they could find. They also have the unique ability to sense the presence of darkspawn, undoubtedly useful given their chosen profession.

Fast forward to the “present” of that world, and the Grey Wardens’ numbers are starting to dwindle since it’s been 400 years since the last Blight. There aren’t enough of them to stop the next Blight (that’s supposed to be due any day now…). This is where your character comes in.
