Dragon Quest IX sticks to the old battle system

The Japanese publication Shonen Jump has revealed that contrary to reports, Dragon Quest IX will not change a thing about its battle system. It’ll stick with the tried, true, tested and maybe a little tired turn-based gameplay. Judging from these screens and scans, the combat will be the same, though enemies will be visible while you walk the maps. Check them out:

Battles look pretty good on 3D, and the developers promise customizable characters whom you can manipulate to have them look the way you want them to. From the physique to the costume, it’s all your call.

Dragon Quest is one of the most successful RPG franchises in Japan, dating back from the early days of gaming. Whenever a Dragon Quest game ships, it’s almost a national holiday. Judging from the sheer volume of DS owners in that country, the copies should sell out within hours. We’ll keep you posted for more revelations.
