It looks like the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has given its usual pre-emptive verdict and rated another title for the Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console service. The upcoming title is none other than the classic Spelunker from Tozai, Inc.

Going as far back as the 8-bit Atari system, Spelunker is a platform game where you explore level after level of underground caverns in search of treasure. What makes this old-school dungeon crawler interesting is that you only have a finite supply of air while exploring caves, which you can replenish at specific points in the game.

The game was ported several times, with both the Commodore 64 and the NES receiving different versions, ever since the original came out in 1983. It’s most likely that the upcoming game will be based on the NES version of Spelunker, so old-school gamers should get ready for its release sometime in the near future.
