Dungeons & Dragons in the Palm of Your Hands

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) has been around for a very long time – 32 years to be exact. So when a successful tabletop game gets a videogame version, us RPG table top players usually give it a very discerning look. Does it include all the rules as was in the book? Can it do what we want, when we want it? Is there any “Role-playing” going on or is it just a “smash ’em up” kind of game? So we go in and take a preview of the game: Dungeons & Dragons:Tactics.

D&D Tabletop is based on the 3.5 Rules, D&D Tactics runs on the same rules. Good news for the newbies, you can assign simple commands to your troops to follow. For the Hardcore RPG gamers, you can also make it as detailed as you like, for example you can make use of spell subcategories to make that ordinary fireball into something else much grander than usual. Verdict: Very Good.

D&D Tabletop allows as few or as many players as needed. With the PSP game, you can do a co-op or team vs. team mode. However, since it currently does not support online multiplayer or game sharing, players will have to share the PSP among themselves as their turn comes. Just make sure your friends have clean hands before handing them your PSP. Verdict: Fair

D&D Tabletop can get new information and stats from various RPG game magazines. D&D: Tactics can download new content. However, they’re still sketchy as to what these contents will be. Hopefully, we can download new monsters, heroes who can assist us, new weapons and armors. Verdict: Good.

Hopefully, Atari can arrange to include the online multiplayer or game sharing option to the game before this ships out. Imagine six RPG players holding PSPs instead of dices and paper & pen. A possible revolution in the making.
