Ergonomics of the PS3 Keypad: how comfortable is it, really?

Back in the Leipzig GC 2008 event, Sony revealed their SIXAXIS peripheral for text input, the PS3 Keypad. Ever wondered what it looked like in the hands of a gamer? Here are some pictures from MTV Multiplayer to, well, lend you a hand.

Just to give you an idea of size differences, the first two pics are of MTV Multiplayer’s Stephen Totilio’s hands (who says he’s 5’6″) and the other two pics are of PlayStaion Home lead developer Jack Buser’s (Totillo says Buser is bigger than him).

Totilio notes that the peripheral itself doesn’t add much weight to the PS3 controller. And Buser, who says he’s been able to use the peripheral a lot already, is able to “blaze through typing with it, to reach for the hardest-to-reach keys.” (as seen in the third pic)

Well, I’m still not completely sold to the idea… this coming from a) someone prone to dyslexia (as in the case of spelling out “Large Hadron Collider” sooo wrong so many times now), and b) someone with butterfingers. I may take some time getting used to it (which would be the same case with each and every other text input device or controller anyways), but damn, this definitely beats carrying around a clunky keyboard.
