Not only is the PS3 the heaviest console in history, it also has the best software library according to Famitsu. The Japanese gaming magazine crunched some numbers and found that the PS3 has the highest percentage of games that scored Gold reviews.

Famitsu’s review system awards a Gold ranking for a game that scores at least 32/40. As of the end of 2009, the magazine has given a Gold award to 77 out of the 171 PS3 games they reviewed. That comes out to 45.05%. The Xbox 360 came in at a very close second with 43.33%.

In the handheld realm, the PSP garnered similar accolades. At 23.20% — or 90 out of 388 games reviewed — the PSP managed to top other handheld gaming devices and ended up fourth overall. The DS follows with 17.14%. Sega’s Game Gear is at the far opposite end of the spectrum with no games getting a Gold review at all.

Here are the numbers published in the latest Famitsu issue. Note that Famitsu’s grading curve has softened somewhat over the years, so games on earlier consoles were reviewed harsher than those on machines released at the turn of the century.
