February NPD: Xbox 360 is top console — after 3 years

x360It’s been a while since Microsoft had any reason to celebrate their standing on the NPD charts. Some 3 years already, in fact. But today, that drought has been broken, thanks to the Xbox 360 beating out every other console for the month of February.

The last time the Xbox 360 was at the top spot was when Halo 3 launched in September of 2007. That’s like, centuries ago in console years. Last month was such a blast for Microsoft’s console, it toppled long-running (and almost-perpetual top placer, Nintendo Wii) with some 442,000 units.

There’s still no beating the Nintendo DS handheld, though, as it kept breaking records, selling an astounding 613,200 units for the month. The PSP, meanwhile, sold a poor 133, 400.

The DS sales aren’t exactly surprising, considering that February was the month the DSi XL launched in North America.

Here are the numbers for February’s NPD charts:

  • Nintendo DS – 613,200
  • Xbox 360 – 422,000
  • Wii – 397,000
  • PS3 – 360,100
  • PSP – 133,400
  • PS2 – 101,900
