Final Fantasy VII tech demo just the beginning?

A recent interview with Final Fantasy X producer Yoshinori Kitase inside Japanese gaming magazine Degenki PlayStation was interesting for several reasons, not the least of which was the indication by Kitase that development of a next-generation Final Fantasy for the PlayStation 3 is already under way. Yet probably the most shocking revelation was the statement made by Kitase that the Final Fantasy VII tech demo that stunned the audience at E3 was actually a rush job that could have looked even better given more time. Put together at the last minute (just a month and a half before E3) by director Motomu Toriyama (of FFX-2) and his team, the tech demo was meant to give gamers a hint of what they could expect from the next generation of Square-Enix titles. And the indication from all this seems to be that if gamers are setting their sites on seeing graphics similar to the tech demo in upcoming Final Fantasy’s, they may just be setting those expectations of theirs too low.
