Five-Year Old Gamecube Still Beats 360 in Japan

Xbox 360 sees fewer customers than Gamecube... sigh.Talk about bad news. It seems the one big part of the world that doesn’t like the Xbox 360 so much is Japan, with less than 100,000 sales of 360 units in Japan this year.

How bad is Microsoft‘s standing in the Japanese console market? Well… the Gamecube sold more units in 2006 than the 360 did.

You read that right. According to Enterbrain‘s F-ism marketing data service, the GC outsold the 360 by around more than 1000 units. While Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 has sold nearly 76,000 units in Japan this year, the cube sold a little over 77,000 units in 2006. Microsoft has been gaining ground in Japan though, but that might be due more to the Gamecube getting phased out than anything else.

Basing from Enterbrain’s figures, it seems that Microsoft needs insane ads to make people buy the 360 in Japan… after all, the Japanese developed Katamari Damacy and a pink blob that sucks things into its mouth to get super powers, for goodness’ sakes.
