Introducing the alien potato masher in Halo 3

Say what? Well, yes the new anti-personnel fragmentation grenade introduced by the Covenant main forces looks to be what we Earthlings know to be the trusty German Stielhandgranate. With spiky things. Yes, that’s it. A spiky potato masher. (*grins*)

Looks like a spiked club - really - Image 1Bungie briefs us on the latest addition to the new weapons promised for the upcoming Halo 3. The Type-2 “Spike Grenade” is a multipurpose weapon. It can be used for covering retreats, forming a conical area of shredding mayhem perpendicular to the surface it exploded on. It can also be used as a sticky bomb.

Given the right amount of force, the little spikes at the end of the “table leg” latch on to anything. Soil, walls, vehicles, shields, aliens…you name it. But yes, the plasma grenade does just that in Halo and Halo 2. So what’s the difference now?

The spike grenade still explodes in the same manner as it would explode on the ground…directionally. Plus, it immediately activates detonation before it could be extracted from whatever it’s stuck to. So if you stick a Brute with one, hop on over to the far left or right, and the explosion shouldn’t be any threat to you – as long as he doesn’t face you, that is.

But perhaps the most worthy of note is that this AP grenade is all about power – enough to stop vehicles. You might consider telling everyone that you’re about to pop one of these babies, because they have a right to know what will happen if they don’t scoot far away enough.

Halo 3 will be released soon in three packages, and hopefully by then, we’ll have enough scoop on new weapons and characters to be introduced in the this latest installment of the successful Halo franchise.
