Japan’s reaction to the first Wii Commercial

Wiimote“Kore wa nandesu yo? Atarashii remo-kun. Nintendo Wii remo-kun.”

Or something like that. Japan‘s first Wii commercial is now out in the wild, and the guy in the Brain Training commercials stated the said line. Interestingly, it’s a far cry from the usual snazzy TV commercials that we normally see. It doesn’t even have the usual, “Look at me, I’m so pretty, buy me!” spiel, which I think is a good thing. It’s really simple stuff, with an announcer sort of giving a Wiimote teaser.

As Gino, one of our writers, pointed out, the ad is a far cry from “the usual Japanese bubble-gum pop.” As such, it got mixed reactions from its Japanese audience, varying from, “cute” and “friendly-looking” to “How the heck are you supposed to play a complicated game like an RPG with a remote control?”

Comments about the commercial mushroomed in Japan’s Amazon site immediately. A lot of people commented in the Wii page a day or two after the TV spot was aired, and according to our source there are around 102 “customer reviews” when he last checked. It’s likely that the comment deluge was influenced by the TV ad, which our source found amazing.

If you ask me, I think it’s a sort of a subliminal message thing. Don’t you think the voice is a tad hypnotic? Altogether now, “Kore wa nandesu yo? Atarashii remo-kun. Nintendo Wii remo-kun. Kore wa nandesu yo? Atarashii remo-kun. Nintendo Wii remo-kun.”

JUST KIDDING. I’m pretty sure we’ll get to see more of the Wii on TV in the future. How about you? What do you think of the ad? Cute? Boring? Interesting? Let us know!
