Karraker and SCEA fine with NPD’s numbers

KarrakerResearch firm NPD Group finally released yesterday their official tally of hardware and software sales for the month of November. Nintendo DS reigned supreme as the handheld was able to sell around 918,000 units. On the other hand, Sony didn’t quite deliver for the PS3 quite literally: just 197,000 of the 400,000 promised units.

Despite that, SCEA Corporate Communications Director David Karraker came out with an announcement today saying the problem has already been fixed. According to the official:

While initial day-one launch shipment goals werenÂ’t achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3s in the pipeline by December 31. We will continue to utilize airfreight delivery for PlayStation 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers.

While we do want to be cheered by this, we can’t help but remember Karraker’s earlier announcement regarding these same promising numbers. We all know now it didn’t turn out exactly as he said it would, now did it? We don’t want to appear jaded; we just want to have PS3s really available for purchase when consumers go to retail stores.

Releasing 800,000 units before the year ends is a daunting task but is far from being impossible. Even Karraker himself, it seems, has decided to look on the brighter side of things. He emphasized that the PS2 is still doing fine as well as the PSP. The former was ranked number 2 overall with 664,000 units sold, while the handheld is still in the thick of things with 412,000 units.

At the end of the day, Karraker claims the company is “very pleased with the NPD data for November”, as it sill showed outstanding sales for all its platforms.
