Lawsuit season 2: Nintendo looking into suing Sony too?

ps3 fact sheet

My oh my, Sony‘s self-dug grave just seems to be getting deeper and deeper with the release of their next-gen console comparison fact sheet! If you’ve been keeping yourself updated on our blogs here in QJ, you’ve probably come across our earlier report about Microsoft’s plans for legal action against Sony. And now, news have reached our ears that Nintendo is looking into suing Sony as well!

Nintendo’s bone of contention? The false info given on Wii’s online access. Apparently, there’s been a misunderstanding regarding Nintendo’s statement about the Opera web browser for Wii — that it’s going to be free ONLY for the first six months (see image above). Good thing is, SPOng was able to get Nintendo UK reps’ stand on this, and they assured us that the Wii’s online play will be free…just like how the online WiFi service works for the DS.

In relation to this, allow us to quote Reggie Fils-Aime (CEO of Nintendo US) during a USA TODAY interview: “We view online gaming as essentially an enhanced way to enjoy the gaming experience and drive more sales of hardware and software…We will offer online-enabled games that the consumers will NOT have to pay a subscription fee for. They’ll be able to enjoy that right out of the box. The Wii console is going to be Wi-Fi enabled, so essentially, you’ll be able to plug it in and go. It won’t have hidden fees or costs.”

There, that should be clear enough. So no need for the Nintendo-loving community to get their panties all in a twist and worry their heads over this issue. The Wii console WIILL (two I’s intended) have WiFi and thus, no additional fees nor charges for online play. Sony’s gonna need one helluva good team of legal representatives if they are to work their way out of two possible major lawsuits from two fellow major companies.

On a lighter note though, I’m gonna have to agree with what my fellow blogger said on this issue; it sure is a good time to be a lawyer at this lawsuit season. Kinda makes me rethink my law school plans…
