Mass Effect music takes futuristic turn

Casey Hudson, project director of BioWare‘s next title Mass Effect, discusses the idea of the music for this story of the distant future (200 years in the future, actually). In the game, you are placed into the shoes of Commander Shepard, an elite military agent, to explore the far reaches of known space to stop an ancient race of intelligent machines from harvesting all life in the galaxy.

So for an upcoming game with details this intricately beautiful and a scope this large, the sound must be up to par. Now Hudson is sure that the right way to do the soundtrack is something equally large and epic in scale: a certain fusion of live orchestra and sophisticated electronica. Does that mean they need a Trekkie Yanni?

Right up BioWare’s alley is Jack Wall, the lead composer for Mass Effect, who also worked on BioWare’s last major title Jade Empire. In tandem with Jack is Sam Hullick, a composer of rich electronic pieces and with the ability to blend electronic sounds with classical instruments.

How did it turn out? Well, Casey says, “Maybe someday we’ll be able to hear the Mass Effect themes live as part of an evening of great game music. But for now, I’ve got a freshly-burned CD of Mass Effect tracks, and I can’t wait to hop in my car and listen to them!”
