TOKYO (AFX) – Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd is planning mass production of double-layer Blu-ray discs, a next-generation optical media that can store 50 gigabytes of data, and will begin shipping samples to Hollywood studios by January, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported without citing sources.

The business paper said the company installed a line to produce double-layered discs at a California site in October and is now working to raise production speed as well as lower costs and defects.

Matsushita already mass produces single-layer Blu-ray discs and is getting ready to commercialize that business.

The double-layer Blu-ray disc is being positioned against HD DVD, the rival next-generation format that is being touted by a group led by Toshiba Corp.
