Since it’s still under tight wraps, we can only guess that the Metal Gear Solid movie isn’t far in development two years after we’ve first heard of it. Unfortunately, during an interview, producer Mike De Luca who’s got a plethora of films under his belt after 23 years in the industry couldn’t stress it out enough that the movie is not even in the position yet to kick things off. The good thing? Solid Snake‘s silver screen appearance seems to be in good hands, and we may hear solid information in less than two months from now.

It’s difficult not to be excited after De Luca detailed his approach in adapting a video game. He explained that taking the Metal Gear Solid series to the movies is akin to bringing books to life, saying “whenever youÂ’re adapting from another medium for film you try to take into account what you need to do to make it a movie.”

De Luca intends to honor the original material’s storyline the way Mortal Kombat did by adopting the game’s DNA and give it “its own cinematic identity so even if you donÂ’t play the game… youÂ’ll come out of that movie feeling like you did at the end of ‘The Matrix’ or the end of ‘Robocop'”. He feels that filmmakers have set the bar low for video game-based movies by taking it easy since they expect fans to swarm theaters anyway, and said he plans to break the mold.

While De Luca revealed that the script is already done, he only dropped a few hints about the Metal Gear Solid movie’s plot. He made it clear that the story won’t be a rip-off, focused on the Cain and Able relationship between Solid Snake and Liquid Snake and their father who should be the Big Boss.

Furthermore, the upcoming stealth action movie’s producer expressed his thoughts on Hideo Kojima‘s work. He was quoted saying:

ThereÂ’s so much story in Metal Gear as opposed to other video games that I think itÂ’s going to be a challenge but itÂ’s an upscale problem to have some much thematic subtexts and story material to draw from so I think we have a leg up already in that itÂ’s such a rich universe.

Kojima is like George Lucas in terms of creating this universe… about war by proxy in this kind of future where war has been outsourced to private companies .

He cited Robocop and The Matrix as inspiration for the aesthetics of Metal Gear Solid‘s big screen incarnation, and said going very topical and satirical is not a bad idea. It’s possible that we may also see a script that honors the storyline of all four games in the core series, he added.
