Microsoft thinks of Wii, but not so much

We are not sure regarding Microsoft‘s official take on Wii but back in the land down under, they are feeling a little secure and complacent. The recent interview with David McLean, Regional Director of Microsoft Australia‘s Home and Entertainment Division, reveals this plus a few other pertinent matters.

WiiMcLean claims that they’ve come to accept that Nintendo will indeed grab a significant chunk of the market. In a rather bold statement, he said “We’ll do a volume, we know Nintendo will do a volume, but they’re going to be constrained…Nintendo, I can’t see them getting more than 50,000 units in the market.

Furthermore, a lot of Aussies have expressed uncertainty about the fact that Nintendo’s Wii-mote will retail in Australia for $69.95. McLean claims however that Christmas isn’t going to be a problem for Wii. “I don’t know it’s going to be a problem for them this Christmas because of who’s going to be buying them this Christmas.

Nintendo has always expressed that more than the traditional gamers, they are more keen on targeting the women and the family market.

The innovations Nintendo has placed on Wii might serve them well in an initial flurry. Later this year though, the PS3 comes out as well. With two high-def consoles slugging it out, we wonder how far and long Wii can stay in the competition. McLean shares the very same idea as he says, “When we’re all in the market and outside of Christmas, then it will be quite interesting to see what the lay of the land looks like.
