Mizuguchi ups the Fame Factor for Lumines 2

Everyone who bought a PSP near its release will surely know the basics about Lumines; you cascade blocks down for big points, jamming out to a groovy tune with flashy imagery, all while adding to the soundtrack yourself with every move you make. Great fun! So what’s going on with Lumines 2?  Well, Mr. Tetsuya Mizuguchi spoke at a development conference in Brighton recently, revealing a few new tidbits on the title.

Mr. Mizuguchi is the creator of Sega Rally, Rez and Space Channel 5 (and of course, Lumines). One thing that Mr. Mizuguchi noted was that Lumines 2 will feature some “pretty famous artists” on the soundtrack. What this means, who knows? I would imagine that most of the artists will be Japanese, but I could be wrong! I think that localization of a game like Lumines (to include artists who are familiar in our region) would take tremendous effort, due to the nature of the game.  Much of the game is based off of the background sound and visuals, so lots of content would have to be revised for the USA if these themes were based on Japanese pop icons.

I personally hope that Lumines doesn’t lose its flare, its twist, its charm. I like the style of the original Lumines, with music that was more instrumental and imagery that was almost abstract. Is this a sign that Lumines may be dumbing down on it’s originality factor? Will it be the same game if you’re forced to watch trendy music videos and play to tunes that you generally don’t care for? Only time will tell. What do you think? Tell us by commenting below!
