More “bad” news on PSP sales

Again, here be more “bad” news regarding PSP sales. Don’t lose your cool though despite this post having shades of the repetitive annoyance of “Sony Hate” news you so rampantly see on the internet, there’s something a bit bright in this one. You just have to focus your perception a bit.

In a report at ITworld.com detailing Sony‘s surprise at the faster-than-expected dwindling of sales of the PSP (something this post will avoid going into) there are a few nice quotes that offer something promising. Hiroshi Kamide, director of the research department at KBC Securities Japan said this:

If you look at the availability of software, there are a lot of games for the PSP but are not particularly successful. You don’t see any million-seller games for the PSP but you do hear about them for the Nintendo DS. The big problem is that while it’s a wonderful-looking machine with a great display, the games are not so different from those you play at home on the PlayStation 2. Most of the software is knock-offs of PlayStation 2 titles and that won’t do Sony any favors

Yes you’ve heard opinions like this before, but here’s something you don’t usually read on the internet. This is what Robert Wiesenthal, chief financial officer of Sony Corporation of America, said:

Clearly on the software side, any real killer title will galvanize the sales. There have been a number of titles that have been terrific, but not the one title that defines the product.

What’s so bright about this? What exactly is it about Wiesenthal’s statement that is so contrary to online sentiment about Sony? It is this: Sony is actually almost outright agreeing with the critics. And we all know that the very first step you take in solving a problem is acknowledging that it exists, and identifying what it is.

Is Sony showing evidence of humility in the face of online criticism that they are being big and bullying and arrogant? One definitely hopes that they are. One also absolutely wishes for all those unique games to be made/released, well, not that the new GTA isn’t out already, but you know what we meant.
