More PS3 Dev Kit Details Via IGN Testing

In addition to previous articles we’ve posted about PS3 development kits, etc., we now have more information not only about the dev kits, but also the controllers and menu system for the new console; basically the final PS3 hardware delivered to developers.

IGN was treated to a demo of Full Auto 2: Battlelines and was able to check out the PS3 hardware. They admitted to initially being concerned about noise and heat from the system but was pleased to find that the PS3 operated quietly (no jet-like sounds) and doesn’t heat up that much. They also discovered the wireless support for the controllers which, by the way, are now lighter because the rumble feature has been removed. Also, the controllers seemed smarter in that it can recognize the player and system it’s connected to, which is a huge advantage especially for LAN party or co-op play.

The new PS3 also boasts of massive storage capacity: each dev kit has 80G storage so  there is no lag whatsoever even if there are eight dev kits simultaneously connected. As for the menus, they found that by pressing the PlayStation button, an overlaid one pops up on top of the screen, making it easier to pull up in-game. The menu also appears sharper and has more icons in it as compared to the PSP. Lucky lucky lucky IGN, getting their hands on PS3 while the rest of us simply have to wait. Although the previews for the PS3 hardware seem all good, let’s hope Sony is planning on even more add-on features that would elevate the gaming experience to another level. *crosses fingers*
