Nintendo has Russia on its list of untapped markets

Wii and DSWhen Nintendo said they are looking at untapped markets, we thought they meant women and the casual gamers. Unknown to  everybody, the Kyoto-based company was talking in terms of geography as well. Business Daily’s  Nihon Keizai Shimbun just reported that Nintendo is about to open a distribution office in Russia. And it is, like they always say, with love.

According to the report, it came to Nintendo’s attention that the U.S., European and Japanese market are already maturing. Despite next-gen releases, characters like Mario and Pokemon need fresh markets with “strong growth potential.” The decision apparently was made after the company’s operating profit more than tripled in the fiscal, first half until September of this year.

The newspaper correspondent also wrote that Nintendo of Europe has already appointed a local agency to start selling game hardware and software starting November.  It is a given fact that the DS will be frontlining the new Russian campaign. The paper, unfortunately, was unable to secure information as to when the Wii will be making its debut there.
