Nintendo vs Nintendo – Nintendo’s Worst Enemy Revealed?

Wii - Nintendo vs NintendoEven though we aren’t sure of the launch date or several other details, the Wii is the topic of this year’s summer. The Wii will revolutionize the way games are played, and will broaden the range of “gamers” to include all ages, young or old. It will re-invent the way you play games with a controller, and will make the game more engaging. Nintendo’s philosophy for the Wii is a very strong statement, but achieving goal requires much more than what Nintendo can offer.

To be a successful console, one must have strong third party support. Without third party support, a console may easily fail with a lack of a varying game library. This hasn’t been an issue of concern for many console hardware companies/developers because the support has always been there. However, Nintendo’s first-party lineup for the Wii is very strong that third-party games will get overshadowed.

This first theory of Nintendo vs Nintendo came from the President of NamcoBandai when discussing the greatest rival when developing games for a Nintendo platform. This arguement was carried on by Scott Steinberg (VP of Marketing in SEGA) as he discussed Sega’s development for the Wii in a podcast from 1up. Scott goes on to argue that developers haven’t focused enough on the “kid business” saying innovation is a big challenge and is required now if developing on the NDS or the Wii.

The Nintendo DS has seen great success as a result of their first-party titles such as New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and Nintendogs. Without the release of Super Mario 64 DS at launch, Nintendo may not have succeeded at first. The NDS however has seen great support from a variety of developers throughout the years – rivaling Nintendo’s great and innovative games from titles such as Phoenix Wright, Sonic Rush, and Meteos.

The Gamecube’s top selling games have all been from Nintendo or a second-party developer – so you will have to go down several titles to find a non-Nintendo title. Will this great success from Nintendo “scare” other developers away from developing for their new Wii console? Can these developers match up with Nintendo’s great games, or will they find themselves down, past the top 10 of the best selling games for a Nintendo console again? Only time will tell…
