Widescreen DS - Image 1What’s next for the Nintendo DS? That’s pretty much a question fans have been asking ever since the Lite version of the handheld was released. One of the more popular rumors that has been in circulation on the internet is the eventual development of a widescreen DS. Too bad Nintendo has debunked this, for now at least.

In a statement to website Eurogamer, Nintendo said that a widescreen DS is “purely rumor and speculation.” Interestingly enough though, the company didn’t comment on what started the rumor in the first place, a Nippon Ichi advertisement which was reportedly posted on the Aeropause website.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Nintendo released the DS Lite model three years after its older, Phatter sibling. Now, it’s been three years since we’ve seen the release of the DS Lite; following the pattern, we may actually be seeing a new version of this handheld at this year’s E3. Will this “rumor” become reality then? We’ll have to wait and see.
