Some four years after it was officially launched, Nintendo is just now considering the concept of charging a fee for their online service. They’re thinking of strengthening their foothold on this channel, and they know they’re gonna need funds to do that.

Shigeru Miyamoto, in an interview with Edge, explains this change of heart:

“Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realize is the core [online] business structure. Do we need to demand customers to pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they could get some extra value? With these core business strategies, I think we are less active than we should be.”

But although the Senior Managing Director for Nintendo conceded that they have not been very proactive on addressing issues pertaining to the MMORPG genre, he did say in defense that where they did have online features implemented, they make sure it’s “where we can provide our customers with more fun and entertainment.”
