Shigeru Miyamoto on retirement and games

miyamotoShigeru Miyamoto is already a living legend among game developers. At 57, he’s accomplished more than most industry veterans out there, and he certainly has quite a collection of major awards and recognitions under his belt and on his trophy shelf. At that age, he already sees the last years of his illustrious career, but even then, Nintendo’s top game mastermind has no intention on giving up on what he does best.

“Well, I am one of the company workers and the company has to retire me some time,” Miyamoto told Industry Gamers. “So from that perspective, yes I may have to retire from Nintendo some day. But when I look around and see how aged cartoonists continue to work on their manga and how movie directors create new movies all the time, I understand that they would never retire. And by the same token, I guess I will still be making games somehow.”

Ever the humble achiever, Miyamoto still considers the state of things after his retirement. “The only question is whether the younger people will be willing to work with me at that far point in the future.”

As far as the prospect of retiring their golden gun, Nintendo might not want to do that anytime soon, especially when the industry three-way is heating up in the war of motion control. I’m still waiting for the best that is yet to come from the great game producer, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the aces he still has up his sleeve.
