One wooden Olympus cam, coming up

Whoa... this really is made outta wood. - Image 1 Whoa... this really is made outta wood. - Image 2

This is seriously some well-made wood carving, and it’s an actual digital camera too. Olympus will be introducing their prototype of this digital camera that is made from wood at the upcoming Photokina 2006 in Germany.

The camera prototype was developed to show off their new digital compression process for wood materials. According to Olympus, the camera feels like natural wood, but is stronger than engineered plastics normally used for digital cameras. Of course, showing off some national pride, the company compressed Japanese cypress wood for their purposes.

Aesthetically, the thing looks pretty sweet, and if you love the feel of wood grain rather than the cold touch of plastics or metal, this may just be something that can get you into the spirit of amateur photography.

No word on protection from termites though, so we’ll just have to see what the verdict is when Photokina 2006 comes around this coming September 26.
