Paul Thurrott: “The Wii is a joke.”

Wii is a joke? We think not. - Image 1If the internet is serious business, then let it be known that according to Paul Thurrott, the Wii is not for serious gamers. Thurrott, longtime tech reporter for Windows related topics, recently reiterated some very not-nice things to say about Nintendo‘s gaming console.

He quotes himself in an entry he made on his Supersite for Windows blog, comparing the three new consoles. He writes,

As for the Wii, I’m going to have to disagree with the consensus and call it as I see it: Unless you have very young kids with no video game experience at all, skip out on this console. The Wii is a joke, a novelty console that doesn’t offer much staying power. Either the 360 or PS3 would be a better choice for almost anyone.

Reiterating that statement on his Internet Nexus blog, he also notes that, once again, the Wii is a joke, a console that is “not for serious gamers at all.”

One thing we fail to understand is why there is such an averse reaction to the Wii. It sells well, people like it for what it does, and the myriad of YouTube videos showing other applications for the Wiimote has been nothing short of amazing. While we want to keep a relatively impartial stance on the Wii, one thing we can say is this.

The definition of a serious gamer has become more fluid as of late. More people are getting into games, and the industry is seeing growth in different directions as a result of the Wii. If the Wii is a joke, then it is a funny one, and one that lets Nintendo laugh all the way to the bank, with thousands of happy smiles from the young and old alike in its wake.
