Pet loyalty: is your pet your bestfriend?

Taming in the World of Warcraft does not require the use of a chair and a whip. It only needs a bit of skill – Tame Beast that is. That’s the easy part (though it’s not that easy at all). Keeping the pet loyal and reliable is the problem.

Just like any other pet, your virtual pets (no neopet images please) have something called moods or happiness rating. There are icons that indicate the moods of your pet so you always have a heads up whether your pet is feeling discontented or ecstatic. Three stoplight colors indicate the states of happiness:

  • Green big smiley face – Your pet is blissfully happy with you and in return it will give 125% of its normal damage. It will also gain loyalty.
  • Yellow smiley face – Your pet isn’t all that happy, though not all that discontented either. The pet will give only normal damage but it will continue earning loyalty. Feed the pet to turn the icon to green.
  • Red frowning face – Need we say it? Your pet is not happy at all and will underperform during fights (75% of damage). Your pet will lose loyalty in this state and also might leave you if you don’t feed it in time.

Now loyalty is another matter. When you first successfully tame a pet, it’s at its lowest loyalty and happiness. Loyalty comes in Rebellious, Unruly, Submissive, Dependable, Faithful, and Man’s Best Friend (your dog would be jealous). Higher level pets gain more training points from loyalty compared with lower level pets.

Training points are much like skill points only for pets. Pet skills are acquired and level through training points. Pet skills have several ranks, you can choose not to use some but it will cost the same as if you did. Skills are divided into two types: passive (resistance, armor) and active (only a maximum of four – bite, rake). Respeccing the pet would require going to a pet trainer – just like you would go to a trainer to respecc your character.

How to raise a pet’s loyalty faster is a matter of debate between characters. There are theories of hunting with them, and giving them some TLC. Some have even experimented on the idle feeding rate. Anyway, here’s a formula for training points.

TrainingPoints = PetLevel * (LoyaltyLevel – 1)

Happy pet leveling!
