Sony India has announced the launch of the PlayStation 3 in the region. The console is set to be priced at INR 39,990 (US$ 975.93) and games available for the title should be priced at INR 2,799 (US$ 68.30). Peripherals like the SIXAXIS wireless controller should be had at INR 2,990 (US$ 72.97). The Blu-ray Remote Control and the HDMI cable are both sold at INR 1,990 (US$ 48.50).

This stanford.edu website notes that India is classified by the World Bank as a low income country with a gross national income of US$ 450. 86 percent of the population lives under US$ 2 per day, and 44% lives under US$ 1 per day.

It’s worth noting though that India, much like other English speaking Asian countries, has become an important outsourcing destination for the customer support needs of multinational corporations. Moreover, the nation is listed as the tenth largest economy in the world, so perhaps, there’s a market there for the high-priced PS3.

If customer support is giving you trouble, he’s probably too busy with MotorStorm. That, or they’re too busy playing something else.
