Price cuts might not be enough to help declining sales numbers, says analyst

Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz is taking a more pessimistic approach to the effect console price cuts will have on declining hardware and software sales numbers. According to him, even price cuts might not be enough to rescue flagging sales.

Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz is taking a more pessimistic approach to the effect console price cuts will have on declining hardware and software sales numbers. According to him, even  price cuts might not be enough to rescue flagging sales.

None of the big three have said anything official yet, but investors are apparently expecting US$ 100 and US$ 50 price cuts for the PS3 and Wii, respectively, along with a new US$ 300 price point for the Xbox 360 Elite. What Creutz is afraid of is that due to other pressures on consumers, price cuts won’t be enough to revitalize sales like they did in the past.

Creutz also expects the decline to narrow down a bit when the NPD Group releases its July sales data. Similar to Michael Pachter’s 22% downturn prediction, Creutz predicts a drop of 23%.
