PS3 firmware cracked by hackers

Pirates are on the job, arr! - Image 1The PS3 is holding well on its own against piracy, but the battle is still ongoing. Just as with any game consoles, hackers are working their way to mod the machine. So far, firmware versions 1.10 and 1.11 have been cracked to allow booting copies of PS3 games.

This is just a baby step, since the copied games only boot but don’t play. Homebrew games won’t run too, which is quite a pain. It already goes without saying that tinkering with your unit also takes away warranty. If you ever plan on playing with your firmware, consider the consequences.

Modded Xbox 360s and Wiis are already out in some pirate markets, allowing boot-leggers to play burned games. How long ’til the PS3 falls? Its predecessors didn’t last much before illegal copies became playable.
