PS3 Japan launch: 88,400 sold in 2 days

japan ps3Local Japanese retail stores are now practically out of PS3 units, as video game magazine publisher Enterbrain reports that a total of 88,400 PS3 units were sold over the weekend.

An Enterbrain official said that these figures show the PS3’s “promising start” (and I’m like “Gee, you think?”) and that Sony would have to replenish their stock of PS3 units in Japan real soon because it doesn’t look like sales are gonna start dropping anytime soon.

Of the 88,400 units sold in just two days, 62 percent of sales (precisely 54,600 units) went to the 60-gigabyte version of the console, which sells for around Â¥ 60,000. Sony isn’t the only one jumping with joy over the Japan launch sales figures as Namco Bandai also emerged as the top game publisher during the launch.

Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire, both from Namco Bandai, were the topsellers during the launch, selling a total of around 30,000 copies each for both titles.
