PS3 launch limited to Top 5 stores?

Big stores get them...

Apparently, trying to get the PS3 from a smaller retail chain so you can avoid long lines isn’t an option. You’ll have to line up like everyone else and hope you get one of the 400,000 units that millions of fans will be wanting come the 17th.

GameDaily has apparently obtained a memo from a small retail chain called Rhino Video Games indicating that Sony won’t be sending the retailer any PS3 units to sell at launch. Sony says that they’ll be limiting shipments to the top five retailers.

We’re still not clear who Sony considers to be the top five retailers, but safe list might be this: Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy, Gamestop/EB, and Circuit City.

The annoying part about this bit of news is SCEA‘s response to GameDaily’s inquiries. The spokesperson reportedly said: “We do not disclose retailer allocations.” A few hours later, a Sony rep mentioned that “there is absolutely no truth to the report that Sony is limiting launch allocations to a select number of retailers. Every single authorized SCEA customer is receiving product at launch.”

This isn’t really a big issue, it’s standard practice for big companies to keep secrets. It’s only logical that they be hush-hush about these kinds of things. This is just us being an annoyed consumer. Thanks for the good service, we just wanted to know which stores will have the console we’ll be buying from you.

No wonder people hoard.
