Sony PS3 - Image 1It’s no secret that the Sony PlayStation 3 carries some of the most advanced components in any consumer electronics product currently in the market. It has shown extraordinary processing capabilities in the past by driving cars and detecting tumors. Don’t look now but it can also simulate molecular dynamics.

Biomedical researchers have developed a program to hook up Sony PlayStation 3s via the Internet to utilize their Cell processors. With this setup, willing PS3 owners can lend their systems’ power for a time so that science may benefit.

Gianni De Fabritiis and his team of scientists at website PS3GRID are inviting everyone to visit their site. If Sony PS3 owners suppose that the cause is a worthwhile one, they can download a 512MB application which is installed into the Sony PS3. Through an Ethernet connection, the PS3 can share its Cell brain with the site together with other PS3s to help the team simulate molecular movement.

According to Gianni De Fabritiis, the Cell is more powerful than the latest Intel and AMD processors. He says that given the capabilities of the Cell, it has the equivalent of 20 regular PCs in terms of computational prowess.
