QJ.NET presents ‘Know the Developers’ Part 4!

Know the Developers Banner (QJ)

So, you’ve been anxiously awaiting the next segment of QJ’s “Know the Developers“, and I’m proud to say – here it is. Our dedicated staff member, Pranav, has worked hard on this segment and right now seems to be a perfect time to present it. You are now probably wondering what developer got the privilege to be interviewed, but you’ll have to wait until after this very short commercial break…

Ah yes, those dreaded commercial breaks, something of which we do not have here – so you are safe. The interview is of the famous SNES emulator developer, Yoyofr. With the help of Laxer3a and thunderZ, Snes9xTYL was created, and as a result has been the best SNES emulator released to date. Be sure to check out the interview of this developer after the jump!

Today, the entire homebrew community was shocked when we “lost” PSMonkey and the announcement of the Snes9xTYL emulator ceasing to be updated unless some promising person comes along in hopes to tune it up. As it is, the emulator is the best we can ask for, almost near perfect with speed and emulation compatibility. So, read the entire interview below –

— Interview —

QJ: What is your real name, and what is your profession?
Yoyofr: Real name is Yohann Magnien, a 29 years old frenchy working as a software engineer living in Paris…

QJ: Since when have you been programming? (Not just PSP)
Yoyofr: started a long, long time ago….  🙂 Actually, I was lucky to have some basic computer courses at school on thompson computers in the middle of the late 1980’s. So I learned basic when I was about 10, then I moved to Pascal, intel x86 assembler and C, C++ later.

QJ: When did you buy your PSP? How soon did you start programming?
Yoyofr: Hmm, if I remember well it was not long after the launch in Japan – in January or February 2005. I started coding on it as soon as firmware 1.5 with kxploit was hacked!

QJ: What was your first notable application? And your favorite creation?
Yoyofr: On the psp, it was snes9xTYL…. even if I don’t have really the time to update it, I’m really proud of LJP on Palm OS!

QJ: Can you name a few homebrew applications/emulators/games which you use? Can you name about one or two favorites?
Yoyofr: Hmm I’m not using my psp so much for others thing than coding snes9xTYL… 😉

QJ: Did you expect the great response people gave to Snes9x TYL? Anything you’d like to say to your fans?
Yoyofr: I was quite surprised by the feedback, and I really want to thank the community for supporting us! It’s really great!

QJ: Are you currently making anything for the PSP?
Yoyofr: Lately, not so much since I’m really busy at work and I’m moving to another house, so I have a lot to do at home too!

QJ: So, what do you plan to do in the future? (Not just for PSP, any console or PC)
Yoyofr: I wanted to do some stuff for gp2x too, but I’m not sure to have enough time; Regarding the psp, I still have one or two projects in my mind, so …. 🙂

QJ: Any suggestions for newbie developers?
Yoyofr: The key to succeed is simple : time, time & more time! Study available sourcecode, try to modify it and then start on a small projects like a simple game or a simple tools to gather some experience. Don’t hope to write a working psx emulator on your first try….

— End of Interview —

It was interesting to read that Yoyofr hasn’t made a habit of trying out new (and old) homebrew games/applications as many of them are even better than a SNES emulator in many minds (Daedalus – N64 Emulator).

Aside from Laxer3a announcing the “end” to the project, we find that one main reason for this might as well be the issue of free time. All developers, StrmnNrmn including, have struggled with time when developing a program – something of which is the ultimate factor in deciding a release of the game. With moving into a new house, it’s no surprise that he hasn’t had time to develop.

Well, that’s it for this weeks edition of “Know the Developers”. Stay tuned to QJ as we continue to whip out these interviews left and right. We’ve been interviewing people from all over the scene with LiraNuna a month ago as a separate segment, and will be pumping out even more interviews from different scenes – possibly from the NDS homebrew scene.
