A while back we heard that the then-unannounced Nintendo 3DS would be powered by Nvidia’s Tegra chip. Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry reports however that that’s not happening anymore.

According to the report, mobile industry insiders have divulged that the tie-up has fallen through. Instead, Nintendo has chosen to tap a Japanese manufacturer for the 3DS’ 3D acceleration hardware.

The same report also notes that the handheld’s development codename is “Nintendo CTR”, which means that rumored chipset we saw is indeed for the 3DS.

Hopefully we’ll see some confirmation on this during Nintendo’s E3 press conference on June 15th.
