Rumor of PS2 emulator for PlayStation 3 returns

I heard this one before. The rumor mill has resurrected the rumor that a PS2 emulator is coming for the PlayStation 3. I call bull, but you can make up your minds for yourselves whether to believe it or not. Details after the link.

The rumor mill has resurrected the rumor that a PS2 emulator is coming for the PlayStation 3. I call bull, but you can make up your minds for yourselves whether to believe it or not.

This rumor comes from NeoGAF poster mephesta, who says that he’s been in contact with a Sony representative. He relates:

He mentioned that since the ps2 has just 1 year left on its life cycle not to expect them to develop anything new with regards to backward comp. He then leans in and lowers his voice, as if to tell me some deep dark secret and mentions that sony may be willing to potentially buy a ps2 emulator to put in future consoles.

I pointed out that I thought there already was a ps2 emulator and he shrugged it off saying that he was just spreading the idea out there.

Admittedly, mephesta calls the Sony rep “a huge tool,” so there’s a marked possibility that this is just a rumor to spread some viral publicity in the PS3’s favor. I don’t believe a word of it until I see an official PR from Sony, but with CES 2009 ongoing, I didn’t want to let this one go without mentioning it to you guys.
