Rumor: Xbox 360 Core System to be phased out

The Xbox 360 Core System - Image 1QJ reader Quixand (you’ve probably conversed with him in the comments section) gives us word that tech critique site, MonstersandCritics.com, is reporting that it is possible that the Xbox 360 Core system could soon be phased out of retail altogether.

The paper trail leads to an Inquirer report which claims that Australian retail chain Dick’s Smith Electronics is withdrawing the Core System from its shelves and not going to re-order the entry level system, claiming that it is an end-of-life product.

A quick look at the Dick Smith Electronics listing of the Core System reveals that it indeed describes the product as “Clearance product, stock is limited.”

The Inquirer is cautious to declare this as an outright sign of an impending phase out, it notes that this could very well be just limited to Down Under. As cautious as The Inquirer was, it must be noted however, that the proclamation that the Core system is an “end-of-life product,” is not backed up in any way on the product page or via any form of official statement from the retailer.

MonstersandCritics.com’s analysis? It believes that this could very well carry water as the likelihood of Microsoft maintaining three Xbox 360 hardware units is slim when considering that the frequency of the smaller capacity PlayStation 3 in retail – the Core system’s competitor in terms of pricing – is slim to say the most.

Amazon.com and others continue to run their stock of the Xbox 360 Core System with no clearance signs or limited stock announcements posted.

Our take? Not enough “official” signs yet for a phase out. We wouldn’t say that the phase out is “impending” but, as others have said, given that it makes sense, one shouldn’t be surprised if it does happen. Tag this as rumor…for now. Thanks for the tip, Quixand! Keep ’em coming.
